Millfield is renowned as one of the UK's most successful schools. But what really defines 'success'? Is it outstanding academic performance or excellent sporting or arts results? Or is it the all-round wellbeing of each pupil – shaping the life skills, character and values needed to be happy, healthy and fulfilled? We firmly believe that you cannot have one without the other.
Founded in 1935 Millfield is today the largest co-educational boarding school in the UK, offering full boarding and flexi boarding from ages 7-13 at the Prep School and full boarding for ages 13-18 at the Senior School.
We know that size brings opportunity. Quite simply, the breadth of our offer is unmatched anywhere else in the UK: an Olympic-sized swimming pool, golf courses and equestrian centres; concert halls, a theatre, art gallery, music centres, a hi-tech chemistry block and renowned Learning Support departments. From theatre, art and music to science, languages and sport, we enable our pupils to follow their passions, all supported by expert teaching and coaching.
Our magnificent facilities are set in over 400 acres of grounds across both the Prep and Senior School campuses in Somerset. London is 135 miles away and major air, rail and road links are all within easy reach. Millfield has its own Travel Office to support pupils transfer to airports and train and coach stations.
We may be one of the bigger independent schools, but we never lose sight of each individual child. We have carefully structured Millfield to make sure it is friendly, approachable and focused on the unique needs of every pupil. And, once your child has found their passion, we look to tailor an education programme that's right for them. With an average class size of 8-16 and a staff pupil ratio of 1 to every 6.5 children, each individual has the support they need, wherever their talents may lie.
A rigorous academic programme is supported by a wide range of opportunities across sport, the Arts and over 80 activities on offer, including dance, skiing, scuba diving, Duke of Edinburgh award and Caterham Car Club. Pupils take part in individual sports and team games and we compete in regional and national fixtures. Whilst Millfield has earned an excellent reputation for sporting success – we were the most represented UK school at the 2012 Olympics – our main focus is to engage each young person through sport and promote confidence, health and wellbeing.
